In an isolated cabin in the woods of southern New Jersey, Canadian-born artists Kirsten Brophy & Stephanie Pym work away at their most recent collaboration SLIP // culture; a controversial mixed-media art installation addressing the individual and one's relationship with one's own skin. A brilliantly shocking body of work from a collaboration of masterminds and master talent, the collection incorporates not only paintings, sculptures, fashion and film but in a morbid twist; taxidermy! Each artist professionally acknowledged in her own right, the duo present themselves under one creative title; The Nile/ culture. Their latest brainchild SLIP// culture will be presented at premiere Wynwood contemporary Gallery 212 Miami home to Art Without Borders Miami and welcoming the duo for second year in a row to feature in an international exhibition honoring 1 year of art and music projects for humanity.
With SLIP // culture The Nile creators, both female, aim to make an extremely powerful statement and to break socially constructed notions that physical attractiveness is one of woman’s most valuable assets and something all women should strive to achieve and maintain. The artists have brazenly compared this cultural epidemic directly to the meat industry with the intention of offering a new perspective on the disturbing truths of both as they are widely accepted in society. Ultimately, the installation invites the beholder to draw a direct correlation between the obvious vulnerability of the animal and the less obvious vulnerability of the human being in a distorted, plasticized and falsified way. Under this pretext, human bodies are akin to the carcasses of farmed animals, hanging on hooks, ready to be cut and destroyed - only to end up as a superficial product and left to be ruthlessly devoured.
